Choosing a college. Picking a major. Exploring careers. Learning how to pay for school. Figuring out what comes after graduation. These are some of the biggest decisions you'll make, yet many students are expected to navigate them with little guidance.

Some grow up surrounded by people who understand college admissions, financial aid, internships, and different career paths. Others have to figure it out on their own. 1stStep was built to help close that gap.

Our goal is simple: provide honest, practical guidance that helps students make informed decisions about college, careers, and life. Whether you're planning to attend a four-year university, transfer from community college, pursue a trade, or explore another path entirely, we're here to help you understand your options and move forward with confidence.

Why I Started 1stStep

Growing up, my parents immigrated from Mexico and built a life in this country through hard work and sacrifice. But many of the systems they encountered were completely unfamiliar. College applications, financial aid, banking, and official paperwork often became my responsibility long before I truly understood any of it myself.

Through a scholarship, I was fortunate enough to attend a private school. That experience exposed me to opportunities I had never seen before. Many of my classmates came from families where parents were physicians, executives, business owners, or finance professionals. Conversations at home naturally included college admissions, different career paths, investing, and what it actually took to build a successful career.

Growing up, one of my best friends' fathers worked in wealth management. He would talk to us about the different career paths in finance, what those roles actually involved, and how people got there. Those conversations changed the way I thought about my future. They also made me realize how many students from backgrounds similar to mine never have access to that kind of guidance. Not because they aren't capable or motivated, but because no one around them has walked those paths before.

When it came time to apply for college, I largely figured it out on my own. I attended Chapman University for one semester before returning home and enrolling at community college. From there, I learned everything I could about transferring, eventually earning admission to the University of Southern California, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Every step taught me something I wished I had known sooner.

Over time, I realized that many of the questions I struggled to answer weren't unique to me. Students everywhere were asking the same things: How does financial aid actually work? What careers exist beyond the handful everyone talks about? Should I attend community college first? How do internships work? What should I major in? How do I know if college is even the right choice?

Those questions shape people's futures, yet too many students are left searching for answers on their own. That's why I built 1stStep.

Who We Serve

1stStep was inspired by the experiences of first-generation students, but it was never meant to serve only first-generation students. It's for anyone who wants better guidance.

Whether you're the first person in your family to attend college, deciding between trade school and a four-year university, planning a transfer, changing career goals, or simply trying to make smarter decisions about your future, this platform is for you.

Every student's journey is different. The goal isn't to push everyone toward the same destination. It's to help each person find the path that's right for them.

What We Believe

We believe access to good information should never depend on your family's income, your school's resources, or who you happen to know.

We believe students deserve honest guidance that explains not just what to do, but why.

We believe success looks different for everyone. For some, that's college. For others, it's a trade, military service, entrepreneurship, or entering the workforce directly. There is no single correct path, only the one that best aligns with your goals and circumstances.

Most importantly, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to make informed decisions with confidence.
